They specialise in electricity generation and distribution; power plant design, construction, and decommissioning; energy trading; and transport.

The challenges

🎯 EDF were about to move to their new, state-of-the-art premises – EDF Smartside – a 40,000m² campus built to house 5 of the EDF Group’s departments, comprising close to 2,300 employees.

This all sounds great on paper, and it ultimately is, but the immediate teething problem of a brand new, large-scale work site is a lot of employees unsure of exactly where they are, exactly where they need to be, and a lot of purpose-built resources underutilised as a result.

It’s like the first day of high school, but for the teachers, the janitorial staff, and the canteen staff, as well as all the students.

EDF needed an effective solution to:

📱 Games and gamification experiences “by Drimify”

EDF opted to use the Drimify gamification platform to build and manage a multi-step digital experience to help employees discover Smartside at their own pace. (A bit like a modern-day treasure hunt.)

This was achieved using the Dynamic Path™ – a powerful experience builder allowing EDF to combine a large range of customisable game engines from the Drimify library to structure their experience, aptly named “Tomorrow at Smartside.”

Completing different stages of “Tomorrow at Smartside” allowed participants to explore the full range of services and amenities available at the campus. For example, Crosswords and Memory Card games offer engaging gameplay and pop-up functionality to reinforce key learnings, while Quizzes can be used to test retention, allow exploration of ideas through simulation, and monitor the journey’s effectiveness.

By simply entering their EDF email address on the data collection form, they could pick up and continue the experience wherever they left off last time around their day-to-day duties, allowing for a gradual discovery that minimised disruptions to operations. (While EDF opted to use emails, single sign-on is an available option.)

Making use of the physical space for a more immersive experience

Some steps required players to search different areas to find a 4-digit code to gain access, which when found, unlocked games relating to that location. This way, the digital journey was able to make use of the very physical space it was educating players about, maximising the level of immersion and effectiveness.

Additionally, discovery steps or levels of “Tomorrow at Smartside” were interspersed with games from the instant win section of Drimify’s catalogue, providing regular incentives to keep playing for a chance to win prizes. This maximised completion rates, ensuring as many staff as possible learned the full extent of Smartside’s benefits and amenities – improving early adoption and usage rates.

The treasure hunt experience was really successful with our employees. It helped them to get to know the new space better because an office relocation isn’t always easy to manage.
